As evening falls, we’ll meet in the centre of San Francisco de Campeche to begin our Day of the Dead night tour. During this tour of the iconic walled city, we’ll delve into the stories, customs and legends that surround Campeche’s capital during this very special time of year.
We’ll stroll amongst illuminated colonial mansions, bastions and fortresses whilst listening to mysterious local tales. During the tour, we’ll admire such iconic sites as the Fort of San Miguel, the majestic Cathedral of San Francisco de Campeche, the central Plaza de la Independencia, the Bastion of San Carlos, the historic Puerta de Tierra, the Church of San Román and the Casa 6 museum.
To round off the day dedicated to the Day of the Dead traditions in Campeche, we’ll head to admire the colourful altars set up in the Historic Centre. There, we’ll discover the offerings, the cempasúchil flowers and the sacred items with which the locals honour the memory of their departed loved ones. Before we finish, we’ll sample some of the region’s typical snacks.
Following this cultural immersion, the activity will draw to a close some 5 hours later.
First thing in the morning, we’ll head to the famous Camino Real, or Artisan Route, to embark on a fascinating cultural, food and archaeological tour of the region’s most authentic towns.
Our first stop will be at the Calkiní community centre and the picturesque village of Bécal, world-famous for its handcrafted jipijapa hats. Did you know that the artisans weave them inside damp caves to preserve the flexibility of the palm fibre? What an astonishing ancient technique!
We’ll continue the tour through Hecelchakán until we reach Pomuch, a town deeply rooted in the worship of ancestors. As well as learning about its unique customs for honouring the dead, you’ll have the chance to sample its famous traditional bread, baked in ancient stone ovens.
In the afternoon, we’ll return to the city to enjoy Campeche’s lively and colourful Day of the Dead Parade, where music, catrinas and folk art will fill the streets.
We’ll conclude the tour after witnessing this unforgettable festive spectacle 12 hours later.
